After that, she attended Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA, on a full scholarship, where she majored in creative writing and African studies.

During her time in the United States, Madjozi started writing poems under the pen name MayaThePoet, delving into themes of politics, identity, and race. She went on to write songs for South African singers and finish her studies at the University of South Africa, Johannesburg, where she had a fellowship after returning to her home country.

The musician first gained attention after her debut single, “Dumi HiPhone,” featuring PS DJz, debuted on April 28, 2017. Her breakthrough came when she collaborated with rapper Okmalumkoolkat on the tune “Ngiyashisa Bhe” and the number one hit “Gqi.” Released on December 14, 2018, alongside the groundbreaking short film Trickshot, Madjozi’s first studio album “Limpopo Champions League” catapulted her to stardom.

In 2019, Madjozi was honored at the 25th South African Music Awards for her accomplishments, taking home the titles of Newcomer of the Year and Best Female Album. Winning the BET Award for Best New International Act that same year further solidified her worldwide significance.
